Seasons change. Things you once loved end. And new beginnings emerge.
When I teach my Criminal Law & Procedure students about the right against self-incrimination (cue up the lawyer TV shows depicting law enforcement reading someone their Miranda rights), I often say that a yes is not a yes unless the person knows they can say no.
The same with something that ends in our lives. An end is only and end because there is something new just ahead.
Without an end, there would be no beginning again.
Once my husband passed, that part of my life ended and a new part began.
As I rode the chairlift up to the top of the ski slope, I pondered with gratitude the new sport I chose to pick up. Without his passing, I likely would never have had the push to begin again.
A new beginning can take many forms. For me, this weekend it meant enjoying a day in the snow, whooshing down a slope and checking my ego at the chairlift while I learned to balance on two sticks called skis.
But it’s more than flying down a hill with skis hanging on for dear life.
It’s about a new perspective you have once your end became an end. It’s about the compassion you now have that you didn’t have before. It’s about picking up the phone to inquire how a friend is doing that day. It’s about reaching out to another and reminding them they do not walk alone.
It’s about taking that extra minute to love on my five children who give me reason to get up each morning.
And it’s about you. It’s about your end, but even more so about your beginning.
So, what does your beginning look like? 💙
